10 brilliant things to do in Rome in April 2026

Category: Things to Do, Guides

Hey everyone, Alyssa here!

Rome in April feels like the city is finally exhaling. The light turns honey-coloured, the gardens start showing off, and the whole place sits in that sweet spot between winter quiet and summer chaos. It is warm enough to wander for hours, but still cool enough to enjoy doing it. For me, this is the month when Rome feels most flattering, most dramatic and most fun.

Here are my top 10 things to do in Rome in April, with a few lovely places to stay and eat from Whats On Rome while you are there.

1. Celebrate Rome’s birthday at Natale di Roma

If you want Rome at its most theatrical, time your trip around Natale di Roma. The city’s birthday celebrations bring the ancient centre to life with reenactments, ceremonies, historical parades and gladiator displays that somehow make Rome feel even more Roman. Around Circus Maximus, the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, the atmosphere is pure spectacle.

This is the kind of weekend when I would absolutely stay somewhere that keeps the ancient heart of the city right on my doorstep, like Fantini Rooms Fori Imperiali or Colosseum Deluxe. Then, between all the drama and dust and glorious overacting, I’d stop for something casual and brilliant at Fuorinorma.

2. Experience the atmosphere of Liberation Day

On 25 April, Rome shifts mood completely for Liberation Day. Piazza Venezia and the Altare della Patria become the emotional centre of the city, and there is something incredibly moving about seeing modern civic remembrance layered on top of a city so obsessed with its ancient past. If you catch the flyover and the patriotic atmosphere around the centre, it gives your trip a completely different tone.

For a central base, I’d check into A Secret Corner-RomeHouseRental, which keeps you close to everything without feeling too generic. Afterwards, when you need food that is quick, local and actually worth your time, Scrocchia - L'Originale Ripiena Romana is such a good stop.

3. Do the Vatican Museums properly

April is one of the best months to visit the Vatican Museums, but it is also one of the busiest, so this is the moment to be organised. Go early, book ahead, wear comfortable shoes and accept that this is not a casual little pop-in. It is a major Rome day. But when you do it properly, it is still one of the most unforgettable cultural experiences in the city.

When you’re there, why not stay nearby at Vatican Best Suite or B&B Behind the Vatican? And after hours of masterpieces, marble and crowds, a reset at Coffee Zone feels like a very smart move.

4. Eat Roman artichokes while they are in season

If there is one truly seasonal reason to visit Rome in April, it is artichoke season. This is when the famous Roman artichoke is at its absolute best, and the city’s menus start leaning into it properly. Whether you order carciofi alla romana or the iconic Jewish-style fried version, it is one of those dishes that tastes completely tied to the moment.

I would make a full food afternoon of it, especially around Testaccio or the Jewish Ghetto. Stay nearby at Casa Minerva a Testaccio and book dinner at URBE cucina romana. For something more casual during the day, Dar Maestro is exactly the kind of place I end up recommending to everyone afterwards.

5. See a major spring exhibition

Rome in April is not only about ruins and piazzas. It is also one of the best times to lean into the city’s exhibition calendar. Big museum shows feel especially good on spring trips because they break up all the walking and give the day a bit of shape. It is a nice reminder that Rome is not only preserving the past, it is curating the present too.

For a polished, central stay that suits a gallery day perfectly, I’d go for master Trevi Rome. Then later on, when you want dinner that still feels stylish without being too formal, Spesso Gourmet Kitchen fits the mood beautifully.

6. Gallery-hop between Bernini and Hokusai

One of my favourite Rome-in-April itineraries is doing two completely different exhibitions in the same trip. You can spend one part of the day in full Roman baroque grandeur, then switch gears into something more refined and meditative. That contrast is part of what makes Rome such a satisfying cultural city. It never really gives you just one version of itself.

If you want to turn it into a full art-and-aperitivo day, stay at Frattina Elegance Suite and finish with dinner at Pasta Urbana. It is the kind of pairing that makes you feel like you have your trip together, even if you absolutely do not.

7. Catch Rome in bloom at the rose garden and the Spanish Steps

April is when Rome softens. The Roseto Comunale opens for the season, flowers start spilling into corners of the city that looked almost severe a month earlier, and the Spanish Steps become even more photogenic than usual. Yes, they are always busy. Yes, everyone takes the same picture. But honestly, in April, I get it.

The rose garden is especially worth it if you want a quieter, more romantic break from the city’s heavier landmarks. Then you can drift back into the centre and make an afternoon of Piazza di Spagna and the surrounding streets. For a gorgeous base nearby, Palazzo Goldoni Condotti Collection is such a good choice. And when hunger kicks in, Da Cicero is a lovely place to settle in.

8. Run, or cheer on, the Roma Appia Run

The Roma Appia Run is one of the coolest things on the April calendar because it turns ancient Rome into something physical. Instead of just looking at history, people are running through it, past major landmarks and onto the Appian Way. Even if you are not joining in yourself, the event adds this energetic, slightly heroic feel to the city.

If the Appian side of Rome appeals to you, I would stay at Luxury & Amazing Appia Antica or b&b Parco degli acquedotti. And once you have done your cultural or athletic duty for the day, Miglio Food&Drink is exactly where I’d head next.

9. Mix culture and technology at the Science Festival and Ara Pacis

Rome has a reputation for living in the past, but April proves that is only half the story. This is a great month to catch the city doing something more contemporary, whether that is a science event, a digital experience, or a museum visit that feels a bit less predictable. It gives your trip range, and I always think range is what makes a Rome itinerary feel special rather than standard.

For this side of the city, Sweet Rome Holiday Flaminio makes a really convenient base. Afterwards, if you want a meal nearby that still feels memorable, I BOTTINI DEL MARE is a great choice.

10. End with opera, music, or just one perfect Roman evening

Rome does evenings exceptionally well in April. This is the month to dress up a little, go to the opera, book a concert, or simply plan a long dinner followed by a slow walk through the centre. The city feels cinematic after dark in spring, and it is one of the easiest times of year to enjoy that without melting or fighting peak-summer crowds.

For a central stay that suits that whole polished-evening energy, Unexpected Rome is a beautiful option. Then finish your day at Nona Bistrot, where dinner feels special but not stiff.

Rome in April is the kind of trip that makes you feel smug in the best possible way. You get the beauty, the history, the food, the flowers and the atmosphere, but with just enough breathing room to enjoy all of it properly. For me, that is the magic of coming now. The city is fully awake, but it still feels like it has time for you.
