The Ultimate 3-Day Rome Itinerary: Where to Stay, Eat, and Explore
Category: Guides
Hey everyone, Alyssa here!
I know first-hand that planning a trip to a city as massive and historic as Rome can feel totally overwhelming. Between the endless lists of ruins, museums, and pasta spots, it’s hard to figure out where to even start. That’s why I’ve done the heavy lifting for you.
I’ve combed through our massive What's On Rome directory to curate a stress-free, hand-picked plan. Whether you're here for the history, the art, or just the carbs, here is your ultimate 3-day guide to the Eternal City!
The Ultimate 3-Day Rome Itinerary: Where to Stay, Eat, and Explore
Section 1: Where to Base Yourself
Your home base can totally make or break your trip. Instead of a one-size-fits-all recommendation, here are a few of my absolute favorite spots depending on your travel style:
For First-Timers (Centro Storico): Staying near the historic center puts you right in the middle of the action. Check into Palazzo Goldoni Condotti Collection for a beautifully warm, deeply personal stay just steps from the Spanish Steps. If you want a chic, modern boutique experience, you can't go wrong with The Spotlight Boutique Hotel.
For Local Charm (Trastevere): If you're looking for cobblestone streets, ivy-draped buildings, and amazing nightlife, Trastevere is your spot. I highly recommend In Trastevere House for its spacious rooms and incredible host.
For Transit & Convenience (Termini): Need quick access to the trains and metro? Try Guest House Number 10, which has an elevator (a rare find!) and makes daily life much easier.

Section 2: Day 1 – The Ancient City
Get ready to step back in time. Wear comfortable shoes!
Morning Exploration: Start your morning taking in the breathtaking scale of ancient Roman engineering at the Aqua Claudia Aqueduct, one of the most majestic aqueducts stretching across the Roman countryside.
Lunch: You’ll definitely be hungry after all that walking. Grab a relaxed meal right near the Colosseum at Ristoro della Salute to refuel.
Afternoon Exploration: While you are near the Colosseum, take a stroll down Via Capo d'Africa to find one of my favorite hidden gems—a beautiful piece of street art titled "Run and live in one breath". It's the perfect photo op!
Dinner: For your first night, head over to Testaccio and treat yourself to fantastic traditional Roman food and a wonderful atmosphere at URBE cucina romana. Their meatballs and tripe are legendary.
Section 3: Day 2 – The Arts & Culture
Today is all about masterpieces, both on the canvas and on the plate.
Morning Exploration: Dedicate your morning to Etruscan history. Head to the National Etruscan Museum to marvel at the famous Apollo di Veio.
Lunch: You absolutely cannot visit Rome without trying the original Fettuccine Alfredo. Sit down for an unforgettable meal at Ristorante Alfredo alla Scrofa, where the iconic dish was born.
Afternoon Exploration: Keep the art theme going with a visit to the Galleria d'Arte Orientale Aquilani & Sons near Piazza di Spagna, featuring an incredible collection of high-end antiques and vintage jewelry.
Dinner: Cross the river into Trastevere for dinner at Tonnarello Scala. They offer a brilliant, modern twist on traditional Roman dishes that you will be dreaming about for weeks.
Section 4: Day 3 – Live Like a Roman
Take it slow today. Focus on unique experiences and eating like a local.
Morning: Escape the city noise and take a relaxing morning horseback ride through nature with Veio Natura a Cavallo. It's a completely different side of Rome!
Lunch: Keep it casual and grab a slice (or three) of authentic Roman pizza al taglio and a handmade supplì at Alice Pizza Trastevere.
Afternoon: Check out something truly unique: the Presepe Poliscenico Permanente in Piazza Euclide. It's a permanent, incredibly detailed nativity scene that is absolutely mesmerizing.
Dinner: End your trip with a cozy, intimate dinner at Lume Osteria Alle Scalette near the Vatican Museums. It's the perfect, quiet send-off to your Roman holiday.
Rome wasn't built in a day, and you certainly can't see it all in three, but this itinerary guarantees you'll hit some of the absolute best spots our city has to offer.
Don't forget to use the search features on What's On Rome to mix and match these recommendations and build your own perfect itinerary.
