Ar Monte Testaccio offers a truly distinctive dining experience, carved directly into the side of Monte Testaccio, an ancient man-made hill composed of Roman pottery shards. The restaurant’s grotto-like rooms and vaulted "caves" create an intimate and timeless atmosphere, steeped in the history of the Eternal City itself. This unique setting allows diners to feel surrounded by archaeology, providing a cool haven in summer and a cosy retreat in winter. Beyond its historical interior, an inviting outdoor terrace opens onto the vibrant energy of the Testaccio neighbourhood, perfect for warm Roman evenings.
The cuisine at Ar Monte Testaccio is a delightful fusion, embodying its motto, "Cuore romano, animo salentino" – a Roman heart with a Salento soul. Diners can savour traditional Roman pasta dishes such as carbonara, amatriciana, or cacio e pepe, all prepared with authenticity. Alongside these classics, the menu features specialties from Salento, Puglia, known for its fresh vegetables and rustic southern recipes. Furthermore, the restaurant serves Roman-style pizzas, characterised by their thin, crisp bases and perfected with seasonal, high-quality ingredients.
This establishment is particularly well-suited for those looking to immerse themselves in authentic Roman life and taste the city's culinary roots away from the busier tourist areas. Its appealing ambience makes it an excellent choice for couples seeking a romantic dinner or small groups of friends desiring a memorable meal. Ar Monte Testaccio provides an ideal opportunity to explore a blend of two distinct Italian culinary traditions within a singular, historically rich setting.

We also had the veal saltimbocca. The veal was super thin; I wish it was a little thicker. We also had the meat and cheese platter for 2, which was amazing! It had a great assortment of meats and cheeses. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you're in the area.
For dessert, we tried the Tiramisu al Pistacchio and that was um, heavenly!
We also had Amaro for digestivo - Salted caramel and Montenegro. Both really good.
Shout out to Lorenzo for his friendly and superior service
Highly recommend!
We loved the pumpkin ravioli topped with chocolate shavings — I’m already dreaming of the next time I can eat it. The hazelnut & honey starter was delicious, and as other reviews have raved the pistachio tiramisu was easily the best I’ve had. It’s creamy, topped generously with nuts, and the cake is moistened throughout.
