Osteria il Matto offers a truly charming and inviting atmosphere, nestled within Rome's vibrant Trastevere neighbourhood, conveniently close to the Porta Portese market. The establishment boasts a rustic yet elegant interior, featuring wooden tables and soft lighting, creating a cosy backdrop for diners. The ambiance is further enhanced by live music, contributing to a warm and welcoming experience. This rare gem distinguishes itself by embodying the spirit of "il Matto", meaning "the Fool" in tarot, symbolising an eternal seeker and a passage between the old and new, which is reflected in their approach to cuisine and character.
The restaurant champions authentic Italian cuisine, with a menu showcasing a delightful array of dishes prepared with carefully sourced, artisan ingredients. Notable selections include the Fresella with tomatoes, burrata, anchovies, and caramelised onions, as well as the savoury Guanciotto, a melt-in-the-mouth stewed beef dish. Patrons often praise the genuine spaghetti alla carbonara, made with guanciale, egg yolks, and Parmesan, along with other pasta dishes and the homemade tiramisu. A highlight for many is the impressive wine list, complemented by knowledgeable staff ready to suggest the ideal pairing, alongside a unique collection of Amari liqueurs for tasting and blending.

I had the sicilian tomato salad, which contained nothing else for 8€ but 3 different kinds of tomato. It was delicious, but a bit pricey. It came with homemade bread. The bread was good as well, but a little too stale for my liking and not as fluffy.
The Carbonara was great! You even got a little box with Pecorino cheese in case you'd have liked add some more.
It gets very crowded in the evening.
