Details

Osteria il Matto offers a truly charming and inviting atmosphere, nestled within Rome's vibrant Trastevere neighbourhood, conveniently close to the Porta Portese market. The establishment boasts a rustic yet elegant interior, featuring wooden tables and soft lighting, creating a cosy backdrop for diners. The ambiance is further enhanced by live music, contributing to a warm and welcoming experience. This rare gem distinguishes itself by embodying the spirit of "il Matto", meaning "the Fool" in tarot, symbolising an eternal seeker and a passage between the old and new, which is reflected in their approach to cuisine and character.

The restaurant champions authentic Italian cuisine, with a menu showcasing a delightful array of dishes prepared with carefully sourced, artisan ingredients. Notable selections include the Fresella with tomatoes, burrata, anchovies, and caramelised onions, as well as the savoury Guanciotto, a melt-in-the-mouth stewed beef dish. Patrons often praise the genuine spaghetti alla carbonara, made with guanciale, egg yolks, and Parmesan, along with other pasta dishes and the homemade tiramisu. A highlight for many is the impressive wine list, complemented by knowledgeable staff ready to suggest the ideal pairing, alongside a unique collection of Amari liqueurs for tasting and blending.

This delightful eatery is particularly well-suited for those seeking an authentic local Italian dining experience away from overly touristy spots, providing excellent value within a reasonable price range. Its welcoming nature makes it perfect for relaxed meals, perhaps after a browse through the nearby Porta Portese market, and outdoor seating is available for al fresco enjoyment. With attentive and friendly staff, Osteria il Matto creates a memorable and unique dining occasion, ideal for intimate gatherings or even celebrating a birthday.

Nice little place. The waiters spoke English and were very friendly. Most of all the waitress was really nice and helpful. She suggested a nice red wine that was really good.

I had the sicilian tomato salad, which contained nothing else for 8€ but 3 different kinds of tomato. It was delicious, but a bit pricey. It came with homemade bread. The bread was good as well, but a little too stale for my liking and not as fluffy.

The Carbonara was great! You even got a little box with Pecorino cheese in case you'd have liked add some more.

It gets very crowded in the evening.

Excellent service. Pasta Coda was perfectly cooked and the carbonara tartufata was savory with 2 type’s of truffles and tasty bacon. The house bread was delicious and our server Kabir was attentive. The biancomanglare was one of my favorites. Very happy with our experience.

This restaurant has some the best food we’ve had anywhere. Aige, our waiter, was absolutely phenomenal. His recommendations were thoughtful and spot on, which led us to try some things we probably wouldn’t have tried otherwise and ended up loving! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. They got us seated right away. Cannot recommend enough.

my friends and i absolutely love il matto! every dish we've tried has been lovely and the staff always recommend new wines to us from different regions in italy. the pasta alla norma is great and if you like sweeter wines, we're obsessed with the moscato d'asti! we've been multiple times and are often served by Aigie, who always welcomes us enthusiastically, is very knowledgeable about the menu, and always checks in to ensure we're enjoying everything! all the staff are so so friendly and willing to let us practice our italian while ordering too. we've never had to wait for a table and the ambiance is warm and inviting.

I happened upon this restaurant my first night in Rome. My Airbnb host recommended it as it was close by to my lodgings. The experience was so delightful I ended up eating there every night on my trip; trying different items on the menu and working my way through their wine selection. The owner, sommelier, and wait staff were friendly and the atmosphere laidback and inviting for a solo traveler. Definitely plan to revisit this restaurant on my next time in Rome!
