Locanda Tonnarello is an iconic restaurant, dating back to 1876, situated in the heart of Rome's colourful Trastevere district, a charming neighbourhood known for its lively atmosphere and picturesque streets. The establishment offers a truly authentic Roman experience, welcoming guests into a lively and informal setting, which some describe as a cosy trattoria. With its warm and inviting ambiance, sometimes featuring live acoustic guitar performances, the restaurant aims to provide the best possible experience of traditional dishes with a personal interpretation.
The menu at Tonnarello is a tribute to classic Roman cuisine, featuring traditional recipes often passed down through generations. Its signature dish, the Tonnarelli cacio e pepe, a thick, spaghetti-like pasta tossed with creamy Pecorino Romano cheese and black pepper, is a particular highlight and considered a must-try. Other popular choices include carbonara, amatriciana, saltimbocca alla romana, tender stewed lamb, hearty oxtail, and a variety of meatballs. The dining experience is often rounded off with their homemade tiramisu, considered among the best in the city.
Tonnarello is well-suited for both locals and tourists seeking an immersion into authentic Roman hospitality and traditional cooking. Its informal yet intimate vibe makes it an ideal spot for fun gatherings with friends or a cosy romantic dinner. Given its immense popularity, especially during peak times, guests should be prepared for queues, as the restaurant typically does not accept reservations. However, the quality of the food and the genuine Roman atmosphere ensure it is considered well worth the wait.

The food was full of flavor, and you can tell they use premium, fresh ingredients. We ordered pasta and lamb, both were excellent. We also enjoyed plenty of Aperol Spritz during happy hour.
The tiramisu was okay, not the highlight, but overall the experience was great.
