Details

Pietre d'inciampo in memoria di Fortunata Coen in Finzi, Carlo Finzi, Adriana Finzi, Enrico Finzi, Luciana Finzi are profoundly moving brass-covered 'stumbling stones' set directly into the pavement outside the family's former residence at Via Alessandro Torlonia, 9, in Rome. These small, yet powerful, memorials offer a poignant and tangible connection to a tragic period in history, distinguishing themselves as a quiet, unassuming part of the urban landscape. They evoke a solemn atmosphere, inviting passers-by to pause and contemplate the individual lives commemorated at this very spot. The stones, part of a widespread European art project by German artist Gunter Demnig, serve as a constant reminder of the human cost of the Holocaust, ensuring that individual stories are not forgotten.

Each brass plaque, measuring approximately 10 by 10 centimetres, is engraved with the name, birth year, date and place of deportation, and, where known, the date of death for each family member. Visitors can read that Carlo Finzi, a distinguished lawyer, along with his wife Fortunata Coen in Finzi and their children Adriana, Enrico, and Luciana, were arrested on 16th October 1943 and subsequently deported to Auschwitz. While Carlo Finzi was assassinated shortly after his arrival at the camp, the others died at unknown locations and dates. These details highlight the personal impact of the racial laws introduced in 1938, which led to the family's marginalisation and Carlo's loss of employment, culminating in their devastating fate.

This site is particularly suited for individuals seeking a deeply reflective and educational experience, offering a stark reminder of historical atrocities right within a residential Roman street. It appeals to those interested in Holocaust remembrance, European history, and the profound personal stories behind broader historical events. A visit here works well for quiet contemplation and provides a powerful complement to more extensive historical tours of Rome, allowing for a personal connection to the lives tragically interrupted by persecution.
