Details

Largo Arenula is a historically rich open space in the heart of Rome, providing a compelling glimpse into the ancient past amidst the bustling modern city. This expansive area, often referred to as Largo di Torre Argentina, serves as a poignant reminder of Rome's layered history, where ancient Republican temples lie several metres below current street level, creating a unique and tranquil atmosphere. It truly stands out for visitors keen to experience significant archaeological wonders without the overwhelming crowds found at other major Roman sites.

Among its most significant features are the ruins of four Roman Republican temples, each designated by a letter, which include the oldest Temple C dedicated to Feronia, and the circular Temple B honouring Fortuna Huiusce Diei. Beyond these impressive architectural remains, Largo Arenula is famously recognised as the site of Pompey's Curia, where Julius Caesar was tragically assassinated in 44 BC. Intriguingly, the Area Sacra also hosts a well-known cat sanctuary, where a thriving colony of felines roams amongst the ancient stones, adding a charming and unexpected element to the historical landscape. Since June 2023, visitors have been able to explore designated walkways within the archaeological zone, allowing for a more intimate experience of these fascinating ruins.

This distinctive location is particularly well-suited for history enthusiasts, cat lovers, and those seeking a quieter yet deeply resonant historical encounter in the Eternal City. It offers an ideal diversion for visitors exploring Rome's historic centre, being conveniently located a short stroll from other iconic landmarks such as the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Campo de' Fiori. The overall appeal of Largo Arenula lies in its compelling blend of profound historical narrative, archaeological grandeur, and the unexpected delight of its resident feline community, offering a truly memorable Roman experience.
