House of Trajan (subterranean)

Piazza del Tempio di Diana, 00153 Roma RM

Rating: 5.0 ★ (1 rating)

Details

Not yet accessible to the public, this complex of 2nd-century AD rooms would appear to have belonged to Emperor Trajan's family based on historical literary and archaeological evidence. What remains of these rooms is located more than 10 meters below street level; they have mosaic floors, with frescoed walls and ceilings: within linear panels with red and green stripes on a white background, small landscapes, theatrical masks, candelabras, flowers and wildlife; there's a wonderful painting of a thrush in flight with a cricket in its beak. This 2nd-century house incorporated rooms from an older republican house and itself was built over by the later Decian Baths.
