Details

First Special Service Force Memorial is a poignant white marble plaque located in Rome, dedicated to the joint American-Canadian special forces unit often known as the "Devil's Brigade" or "Black Devils". This significant memorial, marking the valor of a unit considered a precursor to modern special operations forces, stands against the ancient Aurelian Walls in Piazzale Ostiense, near the evocative Pyramid of Cestius. Its setting amidst such timeless Roman landmarks creates a unique and striking atmosphere, highlighting a crucial, more recent chapter of military history. It serves as a powerful reminder of the Force's pivotal role as the first Allied unit to enter Rome during its liberation in June 1944.

The memorial itself is an inscribed plaque, roughly three feet high and five feet long, mounted approximately ten feet from the ground. Inscriptions in both English and Italian detail the Force's contribution to the liberation of the Eternal City and their securing of the Tiber bridges. Prominently displayed are the Special Forces branch symbol and the First Special Service Force emblem. The plaque also commemorates other fierce battles fought by the Devil's Brigade in Italy, including those at Monte la Defensa, Monte Maio, Monte Sammucro, and Anzio.

This site is particularly suited for history enthusiasts, especially those with an interest in World War II and the daring actions of special operations units. A visit offers a quiet opportunity for contemplation, fitting perfectly into a broader historical tour of Rome or for individuals wishing to honour the legacy of this formidable bi-national commando unit. Its overall appeal lies in its powerful historical narrative, quietly nestled within the grandeur of ancient Rome, reflecting on immense bravery and sacrifice.
