Details

Ex Stabilimento Birra Peroni, a historical industrial complex in Rome's Salario neighbourhood, stands as a notable monument to the city's rich industrial heritage. Once a thriving hub of beer production for the renowned Peroni brewery, the site retains its distinctive red-brick façade and early 20th-century industrial architecture, offering a unique glimpse into Rome's manufacturing past. The impressive scale and functional design of the buildings convey a strong sense of its former bustling activity and its significance as a local landmark.

Although beer production ceased on this site in the 1970s, elements of the original complex have been thoughtfully repurposed. Most notably, a significant portion of the former brewery now houses the MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome. This transformation allows visitors to explore contemporary art exhibitions within the evocative shell of a historic industrial setting, creating a fascinating dialogue between past and present.

This destination particularly appeals to those interested in industrial history, urban regeneration, and modern art. It offers a unique visitor experience for individuals seeking to explore Rome beyond its classical attractions, providing insight into the city's evolving landscape and cultural innovation. The former Peroni brewery is ideal for cultural enthusiasts and those appreciating the clever re-imagining of historical spaces for contemporary public use.

The most anonymous, even though it clearly indicates its origin, and for this reason I'm adding it to Maps and making my FIRST review of it. This is, in fact, the second nucleus of the historic Peroni beer plant, and you can recognize the brand on one facade where it is actually written on the opposite facade. With the success of Peroni beer and the increase in production, the Roman plant needed to expand and acquire new facilities. Thus, in the early decades of the twentieth century, Lot B was created, designed to complement and enhance the existing activities. This part of the complex is also linked to the phase of industrial development led by Gustavo Giovannoni, at a time when technology was becoming increasingly important for the production and preservation of products. Lot B housed key functions, such as the ice factory, essential for keeping the beer cool and distributing it throughout the city and beyond Rome. Architecturally, Lot B is simpler and more functional than Lot A. The buildings are large, regular, and designed primarily to house machinery and equipment. However, the complex maintains a certain order and a strong urban presence, typical of the great industrial architecture of the time. Today it's a modern multi-story parking lot, but Lot B reflects a period of growth and organization: the factory is no longer just a place of production, but a complex system combining technology, logistics, and services.
