Thank you City of Rome for finally honoring our legend with his own street and plaque. I had a privilege of visiting the street and memorial plaque honoring the legend 1960 Olympic champion Abebe Bikila, the barefoot runner. The plaque was unveiled in 2023 by the Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed. The street which is located some 15km outside of the Roma City Center is called Via Abebe Bikila. Abebe was the first Sub-Saharan African to win an Olympic gold medal. After the race, when Bikila was asked why he had run barefoot, he replied: “I wanted the world to know that my country, Ethiopia, has always won with determination and heroism."
