The vast Thermal Baths - Calidarium is located in the open-air museum area of Villa dei Quintili and Santa Maria Nova (2nd century AD).
The Villa is the largest in the Suburbio of Ancient Rome (an area just outside the city), located within the impressive Appian Way Archaeological Park (Q.IX Appio Latino).

This museum area can be accessed from two entrances:
• Via Appia Antica 251 (5th mile) was the original entrance to the Villa
• Via Appia Nuova 1092, near which is the terminus of the 118 bus line.

On the maps on the website, the building is indicated with the letter E.

The luxurious Villa contained large baths, which in ancient Rome consisted of several rooms, the main ones being:

The Frigidarium (cold) – a typically circular room containing a cold-water pool.

The Tepidarium (warm) - the intermediate room where baths were taken in warm water.

The Caldarium (hot) - the outdoor room where steam baths (featured in many historical films) and hot water baths were taken - faced southwest to maximize solar radiation in the afternoon, the most popular time of day.

The large building that housed the Caldarium of this villa is rectangular in plan and had a rectangular pool, accessed via steps on three sides.
To heat the water, there were three bronze boilers, placed above three ovens, the housings of which remain.

The hot air created by the boilers passed through the cavity under the floor of the pool, which is visible in some places.
