Trevi Fountain, Rome's largest Baroque fountain, stands as a spectacular and flamboyant ensemble of mythical figures and wild horses. This magnificent artwork, designed by Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, occupies the entire side of the 17th-century Palazzo Poli, creating a dramatic and detailed visual feast for visitors. Situated in the Trevi district, its name derives from the "tre vie" or three roads that converge at this iconic spot, and its gushing waters contribute to a uniquely serene atmosphere. It is considered a quintessential stop on any Roman itinerary, celebrated for its monumental grandeur and artistic flair.
At its heart, the fountain features a majestic statue of Oceanus, the god of all water, standing on a shell-shaped chariot pulled by two sea horses, each guided by a Triton. One horse is depicted as calm, symbolising the placid sea, whilst the other is restless, representing the ocean's tempestuous moods. Flanking Oceanus are statues representing Abundance and Health. A cherished tradition involves visitors tossing a coin with their right hand over their left shoulder into the water, a gesture said to ensure a return to Rome. From February 1, 2026, a nominal €2 admission fee will apply for access to the inner viewing area directly in front of the basin during regulated hours, although viewing from the main piazza remains free.
