During my tour of the capital, I had the opportunity and pleasure of meeting Massimo Tizzano in his atelier located on the historic Via Margutta. The artist displays some of his prestigious paintings in an environment that is not only an exhibition space but also a workshop complete with palettes, brushes, and paints. While undoubtedly an artist, Tizzano likes to call himself a "craftsman," a term that aptly captures his spirit and the desire to "do," which is expressed through the technique and preparation of his works. Tizzano creates his paintings with the same manual skill and rigor applied by the greatest painters of the Baroque era, from whom he draws inspiration (Velazquez, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Leonardo). His careful study and research lead Tizzano to create his works, starting with the construction of the stretcher, the choice of canvas, the composition of colors, the execution techniques, and even the display cases in which the paintings will be placed for their travel and preservation. Tizzano's stylistic approach stems from a desire to preserve and transmit all the technical and stylistic elements that made 16th- and 17th-century painting famous worldwide. In this regard, the painter regularly holds courses open to anyone who wants to learn or refine their painting skills. Of course, Tizzano doesn't limit himself to exclusively replicating works from the past. There are works in his catalog that I consider innovative and courageous. Some of his paintings feature self-portraits, faces, and contemporary figures placed in original and imaginative contexts. Speaking with Massimo Tizzano, his love and passion for a type of art that is not only stylistically beautiful but also seeks to convey constructive values that have remained unchanged over time and that have much to teach new generations.
