Casa del Sole

For the "ICP S. Ippolito II" affordable housing project, Innocenzo Sabbatini worked on a trapezoidal lot, constructing a symmetrical layout based on the bisector of the corner of the two streets, thus defining a triangular courtyard. The two lateral wings of the block feature a volume based on a progressive reduction in the number of floors, decreasing from seven to two.

This results in a "terraced" construction, strongly characterized by architectural features such as string courses and framed windows. The house is served by five stairwells that open onto the courtyard, which is connected to the outside by an atrium. This complex is also known as the "Casa del Sole" ("House of the Sun"), a name derived from the ingenious solution of decreasing the number of floors toward the south, thus allowing natural light to enter the small internal courtyard. The entire complex houses 89 apartments, each consisting of two or three rooms, accessed via six vertical passages that each lead to three apartments.
The building was constructed between 1919 and 1920, and as of September 18, 2025, it's undergoing a full restoration that hopefully won't distort the original design.
