Details

Piazza di Monte Citorio is a historic public square nestled in the heart of Rome, presenting a captivating blend of ancient grandeur and modern Italian political life. Dominated by the impressive Palazzo Montecitorio, the seat of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, the square exudes a lively atmosphere, making it a splendid location for observing local life and admiring the surrounding architecture. Situated within the Rione Colonna district, this elegant piazza stands on a subtle, artificial mound formed by centuries of accumulated debris, providing a unique topographic character in the city's urban fabric.

At the very centre of the piazza stands the magnificent Montecitorio Obelisk, a towering 21.79-metre granite monument originally quarried in Egypt during the 6th century BC and transported to Rome in 10 BC to function as a gnomon for a colossal sundial. The imposing Palazzo Montecitorio, with its distinctive convex Baroque façade, was initially conceived by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1653, later completed by Carlo Fontana, and now serves as a pivotal symbol of Italy's democratic institutions. Though largely an exterior experience, the palace does open its doors to visitors on the first Sunday of most months, offering a rare glimpse inside this historic seat of power.

This historic square particularly suits those with an appreciation for stunning architecture and a deep interest in Roman history and contemporary Italian politics. Visitors will find it ideal for leisurely strolls, offering picturesque backdrops for photography, whilst the adjacent streets boast charming cafés and shops perfect for enjoying an authentic Italian espresso or a delightful gelato. Piazza di Monte Citorio ultimately appeals to anyone seeking a harmonious blend of historical insight and vibrant city life, making it a truly enriching part of any Roman itinerary.
