Museo della Scuola Romana presents a captivating insight into one of the most dynamic periods of 20th-century Italian art, focusing on the vibrant figurative art movement that flourished in Rome between the First and Second World Wars. Housed within the elegantly restored Casino Nobile of Villa Torlonia, the museum offers a reflective and less-trodden artistic experience, revealing a counter-narrative to the prevailing cultural sentiments of the era. The thoughtfully curated setting allows visitors to immerse themselves in the distinct atmosphere of Roman artistic research during these pivotal decades.

Following a significant reinstallation in 2025, the museum's collection now boasts over 150 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and engravings by notable artists such as Mario Mafai, Antonietta Raphaël, Scipione, and Renato Guttuso. Exhibits explore themes like "Magical Realism" and "Tonalism", alongside a special "Collezione Roma" from BNL BNP Paribas, which provides a unique artistic perspective on the city's landscapes and its profound urban and social transformations between the wars. This rich display illuminates the artistic dialogue that shaped Rome's cultural identity.

This museum is particularly well-suited for art enthusiasts, history buffs, and those seeking a deeper appreciation of Rome's artistic legacy beyond its ancient splendours. It caters to visitors keen on exploring an "off the beaten path" cultural attraction and understanding an artistic movement that quietly challenged the rigid cultural expectations of Mussolini's Italy. The Museo della Scuola Romana offers a compelling and intimate journey into a crucial chapter of Italian modernism, appealing to anyone with an interest in the nuanced development of 20th-century art.

Great news! From September 17, 2025, the museum will reopen its doors with a renovated exhibition. The opening of the exhibition is the culmination of a comprehensive renovation project, promoted and curated by talented professionals. The exhibition has been enriched with sixty works from a bank's private collection, transferred to the museum on loan for use. Visitors can admire the renowned "Rome Collection," a valuable collection of views of the capital, created between 1946 and 1948. The exhibition space has been reorganized into thematic sections illustrating the diverse languages and movements that animated Roman artistic life between the two world wars. The over one hundred and fifty paintings, sculptures, drawings, and engravings on display come from both the permanent collections and loans from private individuals and institutions, as well as works that are rarely accessible because they are held in the Superintendency's storage facilities or belong to private collections. Particularly appreciated is the recognition of the female presence in the history of 20th-century Roman art: a dutiful attention to the rediscovery of female artists often forgotten by official historiography.
