Details

Room of the Masks and Pine Garlands, located within the esteemed House of Augustus on Rome's Palatine Hill, offers a rare glimpse into the opulent domestic life of the Roman Empire's first emperor. These two distinct chambers are celebrated for their remarkably preserved Second Style wall paintings, which transport visitors back to an era of refined artistic expression and imperial sophistication. The atmosphere within these ancient spaces evokes a profound sense of history, allowing one to imagine the daily life and aesthetic sensibilities of Augustus himself.

The main highlights of these rooms are undoubtedly their intricate frescoes, showcasing some of the finest examples of Roman wall painting. The Room of the Masks features elaborate perspectival designs incorporating tragic and comic theatre masks, with architecture painted to evoke a theatrical stage setting. Adjacently, the Room of the Pine Garlands presents a simpler yet equally captivating scheme, adorned with pine festoons draped over painted Doric columns, a motif possibly referencing the nearby temple of Cybele. These masterful trompe-l'oeil compositions create an illusion of depth and grandeur within what were once private chambers.

This fascinating historical site particularly suits history enthusiasts, classical art aficionados, and anyone keen to delve deeper into ancient Roman archaeology. It serves as an exceptional destination for cultural tours and educational visits, offering an immersive experience that illuminates the decorative arts and private world of a pivotal historical figure. The overall appeal lies in its ability to provide a tangible connection to the past, revealing the enduring legacy of Roman imperial design and artistic innovation.

The Room of the Masks and Pine Garlands is one of the most stunning interiors of the House of Augustus. The walls of this small chamber are adorned with subtle frescoes featuring theatrical masks and pine cone garlands, an exceptional example of the Pompeian II style. The delicacy and elegance of these paintings transport us to the world of Imperial Rome – one can feel how Emperor Octavian relaxed here, far from the hustle and bustle of politics.

Here are two more wonders you can visit, albeit only through two glass windows, in the House of Augustus. The first is fully visible because the door is frontal and reproduces a portico adorned with pine garlands. The second, more elaborate, is seen obliquely and displays theatrical masks within frames between rustic temples and bright red Pompeian-style paintings, which you will then find in the subsequent cubicles. They are masterpieces of art and restoration. They are a must-see during your visit to the Forum, so purchase the SUPER PASS ticket with access to the sites, which for just a few euros more will give you unique experiences. No flash photography, please, as glass separates you from the controlled-atmosphere rooms. I recommend the guided tour with a narrator in English or Italian, alternating every half hour. The evocative Rooms of the "Masks" and "Pine Festoons" are located on the western side of the House of Augustus on the Palatine Hill and are part of the private imperial domus, which extended over two floors.

The eastern side houses the reception area, where the beautiful "Hall of Perspectives" stands out for its significance to ancient art.

The "Room of the Masks" features splendid polychrome frescoes on the walls, depicting masks against an architectural background.

The ceiling is simple white.

The "Room of the Pine Festoons" features more sober colors and porticoes adorned with garlands.

The floor is decorated with a white mosaic with black squares, and the simple vaulted ceiling.
