Details

Piazza della Minerva is a charming square nestled in Rome's historic centre, directly behind the Pantheon. This elegant, smaller piazza offers a distinct character, blending ancient history with impressive Baroque artistry and a whimsical touch. Its serene atmosphere provides a welcome respite from the city's busier thoroughfares, standing out for its unique blend of styles and historical depth.

At the heart of the square stands Gian Lorenzo Bernini's celebrated Elephant and Obelisk sculpture, a captivating feature depicting an ancient Egyptian obelisk carried by a marble elephant. Overlooking the piazza is the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome's singular example of a Gothic church, which houses significant artworks including Michelangelo's 'Christ the Redeemer' and frescoes by Filippino Lippi. Visitors can appreciate the rich tapestry of architectural styles and the profound historical narratives embedded within this fascinating space.

This piazza is ideally suited for history buffs, art enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a delightful, less bustling Roman experience. It works exceptionally well for those on a leisurely stroll through the city, offering an easy and rewarding addition to any itinerary. The peculiar elephant statue, in particular, appeals to both adults and children, making it a wonderful spot for a varied audience to soak in Rome's enduring charm and artistic legacy.

Very beautiful because it's small. Next to the Pantheon. The Egyptian obelisk sits atop the marble elephant designed by Bernini.
