Details

Aqla street food medio-orientale presents a delightful, tiny culinary spot in Rome's historic Monteverde vecchio neighbourhood, a refreshing departure from conventional ethnic eateries. This charming venture, opened in March 2023, is a genuine family affair, thoughtfully managed by Yemeni-origin women Nada, her mother Aqla, and sister Samantha, with the restaurant even bearing Mama Aqla's name, meaning 'wise woman'. The atmosphere is notably cosy and authentic, offering a warm and welcoming setting that truly makes it stand out. Its unique blend of Yemeni and Ethiopian flavours, rooted in comforting home cooking, creates a cheerful and spicy ambience, distinct from typical establishments.

The cuisine focuses on Middle Eastern street food, showcasing an intriguing fusion of Yemeni and Ethiopian influences. Diners can savour delicious falafel, known for being crispy and flavourful, alongside Mutabbaq – handcrafted crispy puff pastry rolls with various fillings such as leek, spring onion, egg, coriander, parsley, and tomato, sometimes with spiced meat. The menu also features inviting sandwiches, using quality bread from Roscioli bakery, often named after family members, like the Aya with spiced chicken and garlic sauce. Additionally, creamy hummus is available, accompanied by Arabic bread, and rice dishes with options like chicken, peppers, and pomegranate molasses. An array of Middle Eastern non-alcoholic beverages, including raspberry beer and sparkling tangerine or mulberry drinks, complements the intense flavours of the dishes.

This restaurant is particularly well-suited for those seeking an authentic and culturally enriching gastronomic experience in Rome. It is an excellent choice for enthusiasts of Middle Eastern flavours, especially individuals keen to explore the unique tastes of Yemeni and Ethiopian cooking. The establishment works splendidly for casual meals, providing a quick yet satisfying street food experience at a very reasonable cost. Offering numerous vegetarian and vegan options, it caters thoughtfully to a wide range of dietary preferences, making it ideal for a relaxed lunch or a flavourful evening bite with friends.

This is mainly a takeaway but has a few seats inside.
The food is excellent made from fresh produce, locally sourced with an authentic street vibe.
Prices are excellent for the quality of food and the owner is delightful with much information about the food you are eating.

We had take out from this busy Yemeni/Middle Eastern street food restaurant. Interesting choices and obviously cooked with passion

My Huda roll was stuffed with spiced meat and some rice, and I was recommended to use my spoon to eat some of the filling before attempting the full sandwich - I did, and it was definitely spicy, and very tasty. Big portion so be prepared.

We ordered some fresh hummus as a side - very earthy and thick, and gently spiced. Not overwhelmed by garlic or lemon, or watery like some other places. Loved it.

We also tried the chicken and rice, very well prepared - soft chunks of chicken breast with a sweet/spicy sauce with raisins, almonds and caramelized onions. Again, spicy and delicious and very more-ish.

They also sell Vimto - a fizzy drink, and a blast from my past in Manchester, fruity and complex, great cold.

Good people, nice restaurant, interesting food - give it a try, you'll love it!

I have been living in Rome for almost a year now and I can confirm that this is my favorite place in the whole city. The variety of food allows for anybody with a small to large appetite to indulge in the wonders that Nada and Samantha dish up. From their sandwiches to their soups, everything is bite is packed with flavor. My favorite is the sandwich known as the Aya. As seen in the picture, no crumbs were left. It has been my go to and even though the rest of their menu is phenomenal (I have had the pleasure to try the majority of it), this easily takes the spotlight. However, one of the things I have failed to mention, is that the reason the food is met with such high praise is because it is a direct reflection of the way they (the staff) see the relationship of themselves with food. They pride themselves on quality and subsequently their food is the highest standard of it. This is furthered by the environment they put you in as Nada and Samantha make you feel welcome and at home when eating here. It is an incomparable experience and I would highly recommend eating here!
